Apple Clipping Mask

Download the two images above.

Open Adobe Illustrator

Go to File New – Create a document with the following specs:

Your screen should like something like this:

Go to File – Place and place both apple images, one on each page.

When finished your screen should look like this:

Don’t forget to EMBED your images by clicking on each picture and on the top information bar clicking the button embed.Screen Shot 2016-01-12 at 9.28.27 AM.png

After you embed your images, remember to lock the layer.

Add a new layer by clicking the little icon Screen Shot 2016-01-12 at 9.29.57 AM.pngon the bottom right of the layer palette

Lets start with the grey apple.

Using the pencil toolScreen Shot 2016-01-12 at 9.31.09 AM.png, outline the white apple inside the grey box. Screen Shot 2016-01-12 at 9.31.34 AM.png

Fill with any color by clicking the fill box  Screen Shot 2016-01-12 at 9.32.45 AM.pngon your tool bar and choosing a color.

Draw a square using the rectangle tool Screen Shot 2016-01-12 at 9.35.39 AM.pngand cover the grey box with any color.

Your screen should look like this:

Using the selection toolScreen Shot 2016-01-12 at 9.36.44 AM.png, select everything on the page by dragging a selection around all your objects.

Go to Window – Pathfinder

Now for Part 2 – The Rainbow Apple

Fill with any color

In your layer palette, make layer 2 invisible by clicking the Layer 2 eyeball iconScreen Shot 2016-01-12 at 9.41.49 AM.png

Add a new layer

Using the rectangle toolScreen Shot 2016-01-12 at 9.43.55 AM.png, drag a rectangle that covers each color of the rainbow, you can use any colors that you want.

Repeat this process until all the rectangles and colors are in place.

Turn on the visibility of layer 2

Move Layer 3 below layer 2 by dragging the layer.

Be careful not to drop layer 3 inside of layer 2

Using your selection tool select only the apple body and all the rainbow colored rectangle (NO LEAF)

Right click on the body of the apple by holding CONTROL on your keyboard and make a clipping mask.

Turn off the visibility of layer 1 and your are finished. Save and turn into canvas.

Your document should look something like this.
